bbook: the Apollo Theater re-opened seventy-six years ago today. It was a burlesque theater that catered to a white crowd prior to the reformation. Sydney S. Cohen and Morris Sussman caught on to the African American community in the 20’s and 30’s and on  January 26, 1934 became one of the first venues that offered entertainment to the black community.
